MASTERWORKS I

American Dream

Celebrate the opening of our 31st Season with pieces that demonstrate just how inclusive Classical Music can be. Gershwin, Bernstein, Schulhoff, and Weill all reach into the deep well of popular styles to create concert works, which in turn influenced a new generation of popular works. Weill’s tunes became jazz standards (like The Ballad of Mack the Knife), and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue was both a genre buster and creator. Up until Rhapsody in Blue, piano concertos were the domain of classical composers. But Gershwin, a Tin Pan Alley songsmith with his finger on the pulse of popular styles, wrote a hybrid concerto—at turns formal and informal, swinging and straight, jazz and classical—and forever changed the notion of what classical music could be.
