MASTERWORKS II

FRENCH CONNECTIONS

Two 20th Century French masters of musical storytelling spin very different tales. Ravel’s narrative gift together with his distinctive voice that blends joy and melancholy, nostalgia, and freshness, tells the familiar tales of Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, Beauty and the Beast, and others—all with extraordinary sensitivity, and as stunning mastery of orchestration. Ibert is focused instead on the city he loves: Paris. Musical sketches of all aspects of Parisian life, from bustling restaurants to the Metro, complete with door chimes and squeaking breaks. In between, a gem of the 19th Century from the Belgian virtuoso Henri Vieuxtemps. His 5th violin concerto is filled with beautiful tunes and violinistic pyrotechnics.
