MASTERWORKS III

Mirror Mirror

Two champions of Classical-era decorum, grace, and wit surround 20th Century commentary on precisely those values. Haydn’s 90th Symphony bristles with energy, charm, good-humor, and even some overt musical jokes. Mozart’s 39th marries operatic style with formal clarity; simple, beautiful tunes with complex counterpoint—what Mozart himself called music for ‘short ears and long ears’. Schnittke’s work, a sort of mini-concerto for two violins, is as much theater as music. With the players rearranging themselves midstream, and then, in the end, leaving the conductor all to himself, it is a piece that takes both its musical and theatrical cues from a piece Mozart wrote to accompany a comic pantomime.
