Chamber Concert – Evocations

February 6 @ 3:00 pm

Evocations Chamber Series

Leonid Sigal, violin
Tao Lin, piano
Karen Schubert, horn

While 18th Century music was concerned with proportion and order, the 19th Century often embraced the music that evoked the wild beauty of nature. Amy Beach’s lovely Romance and Debussy’s L’isle joyeuse are both, in their own way, evocations of the natural world. Brahms’s Horn Trio too evokes nature. Shared with its use in this trio, and in larger orchestral works, the horn has always been emblematic of man’s relationship with nature—an instrument played outdoors—on a hunt, or to communicate across long distances (think of the horn’s stretched out cousin, the long gently curved alphorn). In his trio, Brahms writes more for the horn’s generous lyrical capabilities than its heroic ones, creating a unique masterpiece of the chamber.
