Schulhoff Duo for Violin and Cello (1925)
Ravel Sonata for Violin and Cello
Handel – Halvorsen Passacaglia for Violin and Cello
The combination of violin and cello has long inspired composers to fuse the best qualities of chamber music-making — like conversational, spontaneous interactions—with the best qualities of virtuoso soloists — pyrotechnic, full-throttle technical displays. This concert features three works that walk that line expertly. Both Schulhoff’s and Ravel’s works are colorist showpieces—illustrating the vast extent of what two great, and different, masters can achieve with a modest force of two. Schulhoff’s work fuses 1920s avant-garde with jazz and folk elements, while Ravel’s Sonata, written in memory of Debussy, is lean, cool, and austere. Finally, a stunning, acrobatic arrangement of Handel’s Passacaglia is equal parts Halvorsen — himself a brilliant violinist, as it is the music of the great English Baroque composer.
