Masterworks IV
Strength & Providence
RAVEL Le Tombeau de Couperin
SHOSTAKOVICH Cello Concerto No. 1
MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 5 (Reformation)
David Amado, conductor
Julian Schwarz, cello
Mendelssohn balances the reverent with the theatrical and the solemn, with his signature puckish style in his final symphony, the Reformation. The first half features two politically charged works. First, a Soviet era masterpiece – Shostakovich’s first cello concerto in which he taunts Stalinist strictures at every turn with clever, beautiful, affecting, and sometimes startling tactics. We’ll welcome the brilliant Julian Schwarz to join us. Preceding that is a deeply personal World War I memorial work that impressionist master Maurice Ravel wrote as a tribute to his fallen friends.
