Paris Jazz, Terrence Wilson

Overview

Our second Masterworks celebrates the impact of one of America’s greatest exports: Jazz. It swept across the Atlantic during the roaring 20s and was the perfect soundtrack to a freewheeling, carefree decade. Paris became the European epicenter of le jazz hot, and composers flocked there eager to see and hear the hottest musical trend. Four masterpieces attest to the influence of Jazz: Milhaud’s quirky, jaunty score conceived as a soundtrack for a Chaplin comedy; Ravel’s virtuoso, glittering Piano Concerto; the colorful, evocative Jazz Suite by Martinu; and Gershwin’s wide-eyed Parisian musical impression—complete with honking taxi horns.
