WHAT'S INTERESTING

  • Jennifer Higdon is one of America’s leading contemporary classical composers. A comparatively late bloomer, Higdon began music studies when she was 18 years old and started composing at 21.

For the San Francisco premiere, Higdon wrote “Dance Card is a celebration of the joy, lyricism and passion of a group of strings playing together…a string fanfare, gentle serenade, a wild dance. When we attend as audience members, we in effect, fill out our dance card with shared experience.”

  • Igor Stravinsky was one of the towering figures of 20th century music. His wildly dissonant, boldly original score for Le Sacre du Printempts (The Rite of Spring) caused a riot at the ballet’s 1913 Paris premiere.
  • In 1922 Stravinsky again shocked the artistic world with Pulcinella. This time it was not hard driving modernism that proved surprising. Rather it was the seemingly conservative, classical aura of the score that audiences were unprepared for.
  • With Pulcinella, Stravinsky began his neo-classical period in which he looked back to 18th century models to create a contemporary take on the formal structure and stylistic idiom of Haydn, Mozart and the Mannheim school of composers.
