Kodály Duo for violin and cello
Ravel Sontata for violin and cello
Handel – Halvorsen Passacaglia for Violin and Viola
The combination of violin and cello has long inspired composers to fuse the best qualities of chamber music-making—like conversational, spontaneous interactions—with the best qualities of virtuoso soloists—pyrotechnic, full-throttle technical displays. This concert features three works that walk that line expertly. Kodály’s emotionally charged duo (1914) Is inspired in equal parts by the music and language of his native Hungary, and the looming Great War. Ravel’s Sonata, written in memory of Debussy, is lean, cool, and austere. Finally, a stunning, acrobatic arrangement of Handel’s Passacaglia is equal parts Halvorsen—himself a brilliant violinist, as it is music of the great English Baroque composer.
