Latin Passions

March 6-7, 2024

Guest Artist: Leonid Sigal

Overview

Passions run high in our third Masterworks. Music from, and about, Spain frames a virtuoso tango-inflected violin concerto from Argentina. We open with excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen— including the indelible Seguedille and Toréadors. Though French, Bizet brilliantly captures the swagger and ardor of the Iberian spirit. Spaniard Manuel de Falla’s energized, colorful ballet score, written for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes (of Rite of Spring fame), overflowing with drama, high spirits, and, of course, castanets, occupies the second half. In between Astor Piazzolla’s homage to Vivaldi fuses classical forms with the passions of tango.
